Workshops/Classes: Workshops & Performances: Urban Gypsy Presents - 2010 3rd Coast Tribal Event Thursday, January 7, 2010 - Sunday, January 10, 2010
Friday, January 8 - 10AM-NoonEastern Rhythms for the Western Ear and Group Musical Dynamics (2hour workshop) "Eastern Rhythms for the Western Ear and Group Musical Dynamics" is actually geared toward GROUPS AND TROUPES. Why? Because it's his theory that as danc...ers, if we all learn how to breathe and move and make rhythm together, we are not only closer and more cohesive, but more authentic and engaging as performers! Now, imagine yourselves performing, the audience on the edge of their seats... and from no where, you begin to make rhythm with your bodies and maybe even small percussion ... AND THEN you all begin moving, dancing, creating SOUND & MOVEMENT all on your own! No electronics, no CD, just the organic nature of humans making rhythm. Class Description - Learn to be comfortable in the world of Eastern rhythm by learning basic principles of rhythm that are universal to every culture and style. Work with or without percussion instruments - bring any and/or every percussion instrument you have access to, or just use your hands, feet, vocal cords, etc. Class will involve learning to break apart rhythm (basic and complex) so that no rhythm will be a mystery. We will also work with group dynamics, learning to create and understand how poly-rhythms working to develop a layered effect useful to *ANY* level of dancer or musician from novice to professional, allowing any group or troupe to become their own percussive orchestra. All levels of dancer or musician welcome.
Rooted in Horror began as a plan for a marketing tool for the 13th Gate Haunted House in Baton Rouge, LA; consistently one of the best in the nation (2009 made its 2nd number 1 ranking.) However, people have budgets, and plans fall through. After sponsors fell through, I decided to continue on my own and make the album a showcase of different styles and skills that could translate to horror movie soundtracks and video games.
Some of the songs are more of an ambient dark wave style, some definitely heavy and some tribal drum based. Lyrical content came from lots of Zombie movies and H.P. Lovecraft stories and even personal experiences.
This whole CD was done at my home studio over about a year. It’s not easy to come up with spooky music when it’s 100 degrees and very bright and sunny outside. I ended up putting black plastic over my studio windows and using very low lights so I could pretend it was dark and scary in the middle of a summer day.
All songs on this CD were written, arranged, performed and engineered by Shelly A. Plaisance, Jr. Except for track 7 which was performed by Mother Nature.

1. Azathoth’s Court - Lovecraft based with Ancient Sumerian lyrics as he commands his servitors and Shoggoths
2. Straightjacket Dreams - Empty old asylum late at night… what would you dream about if you fell asleep in a straightjacket?
3. Zombie Hate to Live - Slow Zombies break loose song. I tried to write a song from a freshly undead point of view. Not a lot of lyrics ‘cause Zombies don’t have a lot of brain power, that’s why they want to eat yours.
4. Damned Clowns - ‘Cause all clowns are scary, especially sharp toothed, hostile, meat-eating clowns from hell. It’s tough to get scary clowns across without a bloody rubber nose.
5. Uprising - (Ambient) Deep Sea horrors head for the surface (hey? Aren’t we on the surface?) I don’t think they like what we are dumping in the ocean.
6. Cthulhu Swamp Cult - In the original “Call of Cthulhu” story by H.P. Lovecraft, there is a scene in the South Louisiana swamps involving the cult performing a dark ritual, witnessed by the police. This song is my interpretation complete with Sumerian vocals. No synthetic instruments were used.
7. Gustav Howls - A small taste of some of the peak winds from Hurricane Gustav. The highest point on this recording was confirmed by a wind gauge 1 mile away at 111mph. We sat through hours of this.
8. Rage for Days - For clearing away all of the fast moving zombies in your TV, City, Town, etc. “…go to your blade if you run out of bullets, throw ‘em gasoline.”
9. Dark Pharaoh - Odd time signature – Hissed Ancient Egyptian lyrics. I was going to call this Nyarlathotep but only hard core H.P. Lovecraft fans would get it.
10. Found in Me - What can be found in your dark heart? Tribal drums and metal guitars – YEAH!
11. Cut em Down - A run for your life guitar solo… or a turn and fight to the death guitar solo. |
